The Rhythm and its Semantic Dimensions in the Poem “Our Home, I Sacrifice My Soul To You” By the Nigerian Poet Ishaq Shuaib Al-Jiyeliy

    Abstract

Rhythm is one of the most prominent stylistic features in poetic discourse. It manifests at both phonetical and semantic levels. It functions as a structural technique with a distinctive role in aesthetic formation and contributes significantly to the poetic quality of the text. A central aim of stylistic study is to identify the principle of selection through which aesthetic value is conferred upon a text.IshaqShuaib Al-Jiyeliy is one of the Nigerian Arabic poets who carefully select their poetic notes and rhythmic patterns in tandem with contextual demands and intended meanings, thereby enhancing the beauty of their poetic fabric. Despite this, his poetry has received little scholarly attention. This study therefore seeks to explore and highlight the aesthetic impact of rhythmic phenomena and their semantic dimensions in Al-Jiyeliy’s poem “Our Home, I Sacrifice My Soul to You.” It also examines the stylistic and artistic features employed by the poet in crafting this work. The researcher adopts a descriptive–analytical approach to gather relevant data, describe it, analyses it, and interpret it, with the aim of revealing the aesthetic qualities of rhythm within the poem. The study concludes that both external and internal rhythmic components contribute meaningfully to the poem’s rhythmic aesthetics, and that the interplay of these rhythmic techniques provides the poem with a distinct rhythmic momentum that enhances its artistic beauty.
