Abstract
This study examines the Tip-of-the-Tongue (TOT) phenomenon among elderly Hausa speakers with cognitive decline in Kano metropolis. The study focuses on lexical retrieval difficulties associated with ageing between 65 and 75 years. The objective of the study is to analyze the occurrence of the Tip-of-the-Tongue phenomenon and to determine whether there is any difference between male and female participants. The study adopts the Transmission Deficit Model proposed by Burke & MacKay (1990) as its theoretical framework. Data were collected using pictures of well-known personalities to elicit lexical retrieval responses from the twelve participants used. A quantitative approach and purposive sampling technique were employed in analyzing and selecting the participants. The findings reveal that ageing and cognitive decline contribute to lexical retrieval difficulties among elderly Hausa speakers and it is more frequent in male then female.
