Non-Automatic Morphophonological Alternation In The Pabər/Bura Verb Forms

    Abstract

    This study investigates the non-automatic morphophonological alternation in Pabǝr/Bura verbs within the framework of Generative Phonological (GP) Theory. The study examined the various alternations that occurred within Pabər/Bura verbs and explained what motivates these alternation rules were formulated for every alternation discussed. The analysis of our data which proved the non-automatic morphophonological alternations evident in Pabər/Bura verbs, reveals that the non-automatic morphophonological alternations that operates with the verbs inPabər/Bura occurs through inflectional processes, because most of the verbs analyzed do not form new words but induce the realization of another form of the verb or class. The only modification process found to operate in the process of data analysis is the vowel deletion. This research involves fieldwork where multiple of data were collected through interview and observation. The data was collected from forty-eight (48) informants, eight (8) from each Local Government Areas of Biu Emirate theseLocal Government Areas include ƁayoBiu, Hawul, and Kwaya-kusarin Borno State and Gujba and Gulani in Yobe State.
