Abstract
This article is ‘aNeo - Aristotelian Rhetorical Analysis of “Building collapse in Nigeria as a souvenir of the collapse of national values. It is built on the notion that inaugural lectures do not only inform, celebrate the ascension of an academic to rank of Professor or display a scholar’s contribution to his or her discipline. It is also an avenue through which attitude change is targeted while advocating the desired attitude. The study set out to uncover the presence or absence of the three appeals or artistic proofs – ethos, pathos and logos as well as how these are employed. Findings reveal a heavy reliance on logos followed by pathos and then ethos as well as varying degrees to which these are used. The study recommends that more rhetorical criticism be carried out on academic public communications like this to uncover patterns with which to gauge effects of attitude change efforts.
